Brunei Darussalam is committed to the climate ambition of moving towards net zero by 2050. The two key national climate efforts to shape a low carbon and resilient future are mainly through energy transition and forest preservation. As part of UOB Asset Management's (UOBAM) commitment to sustainability, we support the forest preservation development goal, and aim to contribute through our event, in collaboration with Green Brunei and supported by the Brunei Climate Change Secretariat.
Furthermore, the tree planting activity hopes to serve as a reminder to everyone on the importance of maintaining an adequate amount of greenery in our community areas. Its contribution in absorbing emissions and combating climate change is very important, especially with increasing climate risk. We also hope to emphasise that change can be more impactful and significant when we collaborate.
Why it matters?
Brunei National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP)
Brunei National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP)
In accordance with the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), Brunei Darussalam introduced strategies to reduce GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions by 20% relative to Business-As-Usual levels by 2030. Despite Brunei being a small contributor to global GHG emissions (0.025%), Brunei has set its sights on achieving net-zero by 2050
Our initiative focusses on complimenting two of the ten strategies of the BNCCP. These include:
BNCCP’s Strategy 2 (Forest Cover) * of increasing Brunei Darussalam’s carbon sink through afforestation and reforestation programmes, we aim to contribute to the national goal of planting 500,000 trees by 2035 through this tree planting activity.
We also aim to create awareness and education to our community which is in line with Strategy 10 (Awareness and Education) *.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Goal 13 Climate Action is a global sustainable development agenda, that targets to combat climate change and its impact by 2030.
- As energy-related CO2 emissions amplified by 6% in 2021, increasing carbon sink through planting trees will potentially minimise the effects of climate change.
- Through this event, we also hope to accelerate Goal 17 Partnerships for The Goals, one of the targets for this goal is to encourage effective public, public-private, and civil society partnerships.
Education and awareness
Education and awareness
- We value the importance of instilling environmental awareness through education. By engaging young communities such as students, we hope to enrich and inspire a highly-educated society to lead a better future.
- Through the planting activity, we hope to raise awareness and educate the community that increasing our carbon sink will help towards collectively combating climate change. Thus, encouraging them to continue planting or adopting more plants/trees.
